Purpose and Summary
This Policy describes provides standards of conduct for University Staff.
The University of Arizona (University) expects all University Staff to demonstrate professionalism, uphold the University’s Core Values, and comply with university policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
Scope
This Policy applies to all University Staff.
Definitions
Unit means any University college, school, department, program, or other operating unit.
University Assets means items of tangible or intangible property owned by, leased to, licensed to, or in the possession of the University. University Assets also include items which rightfully should be a University Asset but were diverted due to Misuse. Examples of University Assets include but are not limited to, money, paid employee time, proprietary information, intellectual property (such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights), land, buildings, improvements, equipment, vehicles, software, supplies, tools, inventory, library volumes, art objects, and museum pieces.
University Property means all land, buildings, and other facilities owned, operated, leased, or controlled by the University.
Policy
Expectations of University Staff
University Staff are expected to adhere to the following standards of conduct. This expectation applies to all interactions with University students, coworkers, supervisors, direct reports, internal and external customers, vendors, contractors, and visitors. Interactions may occur verbally, nonverbally, physically, in writing, or through imagery, electronic, or digital means.- Integrity
- Conduct themselves honestly and ethically.
- Demonstrate the University Core Values in all workplace interactions and responsibilities
. - Avoid conflicts of interest or situations where personal interests may conflict with University interests.
- Respect
- Treat all individuals with courtesy, patience, and respect, fostering an environment that is welcoming to all.
- Compliance with University and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) Policies, Applicable Laws, and Funding Source Requirements
- Adhere to all applicable ABOR, University, and Unit policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Comply fully with the University’s Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy.
- Follow federal, state, and local laws and regulations as they pertain to
yourjob responsibilities. - Comply with specific terms, conditions, and regulations set forth by a funding agency.
- Report any suspected violations of laws, regulations, or University policies to the appropriate office or authorities.
- Confidentiality
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive or proprietary information that is disclosed during employment. University Staff must not share confidential information regarding University business, students, or employees without authorization.
- Comply with University privacy, security, and confidentiality policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Attendance and Punctuality
- Report to work on time and maintain regular attendance in accordance with University and Unit guidelines.
- Notify supervisors promptly of absences due to illness, emergency, or other reasons, following Unit procedures.
- Workplace Safety
- Support a safe and healthy work environment by following all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
- Report unsafe practices or hazards to the appropriate University authorities.
- Use of University Resources
- Use University Assets responsibly and only for University-related purposes.
- Follow policies regarding technology use, including email, internet, and computer systems.
- Performance and Accountability
- Perform job duties effectively and meet established performance standards.
- Take responsibility for actions taken and quality of work.
- Accept constructive feedback and actively seek to improve performance.
- Integrity
Expectations of University Staff Supervisors
In addition to meeting all staff conduct standards, University Staff supervisors are expected to:
- Demonstrate leadership by modeling professionalism, respect, and workplace safety.
- Set clear expectations and manage performance through regular communication and feedback.
- Address performance or behavior issues through coaching and corrective action, as appropriate.
- Establish and communicate performance standards, including quality, quantity, accuracy, timeliness, efficiency, and productivity.
- Provide specific guidance on professionalism and appropriate behavior as needed.
Unacceptable Conduct
Misconduct includes but is not limited to the following:
Dishonesty or Misrepresentation
- Providing false information or misrepresenting oneself or others in any form, including falsifying documents, records, or credentials.
Harassment, Discrimination, and Retaliation
- Any violation of the University’s Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy.
Inappropriate Use of Substances
- Working under the influence of alcohol or consuming alcohol at work or during breaks, except when alcohol is specifically permitted at a University-sponsored event.
- Possessing, using, or working under the influence of any controlled substance not prescribed by a health-care provider. Medical marijuana is not permitted on University Property and University vehicles.
- Smoking, vaping, or using tobacco or marijuana products on University Property or in University vehicles.
- Theft or Misuse
- Stealing, misusing, or otherwise improperly using University Assets or resources.
- Using University resources for personal or non-work purposes.
- Discourtesy, Violence or Threats
- Engaging in violence, intimidation, or threats in the workplace.
- Bringing weapons to work or engaging in conduct that risks injury or property damage.
- Failing to work harmoniously with others or serve the public with courtesy, including use of profanity, offensive language, or unprofessional behavior.
- Violation of Law or Policy
- Engaging in conduct that violates federal, state, or local laws, University or ABOR policies, or results in criminal charges or convictions.
- Releasing sensitive or confidential information without authorization, including student records, medical information, trade secrets, or personal information about employees, students, alumni, or donors.
- Failure to meet Expectations or Insubordination
- Failing to follow lawful directions of supervisors, leaders, or University officials; or engaging in disruptive, disrespectful, or insubordinate behavior toward University students, coworkers, supervisors, direct reports, internal and external customers, vendors, contractors, or visitors.
Violations
Violations of this Policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination from employment.
Compliance
Human Resources is responsible for overseeing compliance with this Policy.
