Graduate Assistant/Associate Summer/Winter Session Instructors Policy

A. Eligibility

1. Graduate students who were not hired as GAs in the previous semester cannot be hired at the GA level for winter or summer session. They must be hired using the faculty title.
2. Graduate students who are not graduating should, in most cases, be hired with the GA title.
3. Graduate students graduating before the next major (fall/spring) semester must be hired using the faculty title. Units can choose to pay at the faculty rate or GA rate, but it must be consistent across the Unit for all graduate students in this situation.
4. GA Summer Instructors that will continue as graduate students MUST be enrolled full time for the following fall semester before they can be paid for summer hours. Refer to the full-time Enrollment Policy.

B. Supervision

1. All GAs (including GAs who are the sole instructor of a class) must be assigned a faculty or instructional staff supervisor, to whom they will report and who will be available to mentor them as necessary during the period of their appointment.
2. Lead GAs and peer-to-peer mentoring can supplement this reporting structure. However, formal evaluation and supervision of GAs rest with the faculty or instructional staff supervisor. GAs may not evaluate other GAs.

C. Teaching Load

1. GAs instructing graduate level courses may teach only one 3-4 unit section per session without an exception request. No exceptions needed for pre-session. Send exception requests to gahelp@grad.arizona.edu.
