Purpose and Summary

This Policy outlines the requirements for written end-of-term evaluations for Graduate Assistants/Associates (GAs) at the University of Arizona (University).

Scope

This Policy applies to all Graduate Assistants/Associates (GAs) and all Units.

Definitions

Graduate Assistant/Associate (GA) means a graduate degree-seeking student employed by the University to assist with teaching, research, or outreach activities. GA is an umbrella term encompassing Graduate Teaching Assistants/Associates (TAs), Graduate Research Assistant/Associates (GRAs), Graduate Outreach Assistants/Associates (GOAs), and Graduate Assistant, Head Residents.

Unit means any University college, school, department, program, or other operating unit.

Policy

A. End-of-Term Evaluations (GA Career Conversations)

  1. The University requires that each GA receive a written performance evaluation from their supervisor at the end of each term of hire, regardless of the specific duties.
  2. The end-of-term evaluation is intended to be a tool for both the GA and the Unit to monitor and facilitate teaching/research/outreach improvements and to assist with the GA’s professional development.
  3. The Graduate College has designed a Career Conversations form that emulates the one used for other University employees:
    1. TA Conversations
    2. GRA Conversations
    3. GOA Conversations
  4. The career conversation should follow the Human Resources guidance with one important exception: GAs are not expected to align their evaluations to the University’s strategic plan.
  5. The individual hiring Unit will set up the flow, format, and additional rubrics that meet the hiring Unit’s needs.
  6. Completion of the GA career conversations document by the GA is a condition of continued employment.
  7. The hiring Unit is responsible for keeping the Career Conversations form on file. The hiring Unit will give a signed copy to the GA.
  8. Attempted submission by unauthorized parties may put the submitter at risk for a Student Code of Conduct violation or other disciplinary actions related to employees or DCCs.
