Purpose and Summary
This Policy establishes the official appointment titles for Graduate Assistants/Associates (GAs) at the University of Arizona (University) and provides guidance on job duties and funding restrictions.
Scope
This Policy applies to all Graduate Assistants/Associates (GAs) and all Units.
Definitions
Graduate Assistant/Associate (GA) means a graduate degree-seeking student employed by the University to assist with teaching, research, or outreach activities. GA is an umbrella term encompassing Graduate Teaching Assistants/Associates (TAs), Graduate Research Assistant/Associates (GRAs), Graduate Outreach Assistants/Associates (GOAs), and Graduate Assistant, Head Residents.
Unit means any University college, school, department, program or other operating unit.
Policy
A. Appointment and Classification of Graduate Students
- Graduate students who are assigned GA duties, such as teaching or research related activities including grading, must be hired with the title of Graduate Assistant or Graduate Associate.
- Per IRS Section 117, graduate students performing GA duties must not be hired as student workers (see Graduate Assistant/Associate Workload Policy section C) and must not be paid using fellowship funds. Student workers are generally assigned tasks that are routine in nature and require little or no previous training or work experience.
- Graduate students are advised to consult with the appointing Unit for clarification of the duties and responsibilities associated with a particular job title.
