Purpose and Summary
The purpose of this Policy is to regulate the approval, design, placement, and modification of University of Arizona (University) Exterior Signage on University Property. This Policy, which is to be read and applied in harmony with the Campus Use Policy (Interim), applies to the University’s temporary and permanent Exterior Signage to ensure consistency, accessibility, wayfinding, and compliance with University Brand Guidelines.
Scope
This Policy applies to University Exterior Signage displayed or requested for display on University Property by Units, Employees, or Designated Campus Colleagues (DCCs).
Definitions
Designated Campus Colleagues (DCCs) means affiliates, associates, volunteers, and interns who are granted DCC status by the University, who contribute their time, services, and expertise to help the University accomplish its mission of teaching, research, and service.
Employee means all University employees, including faculty, staff, graduate assistants/associates, and student workers, whether employment is full-time, part-time, permanent, or temporary.
Exterior Signage means any permanent or temporary sign, banner, display, or similar material located outside on University Property, including interior signage that is visible from exterior spaces, that conveys information, identifies facilities, or directs movement.
Standard Building Signage means entry signs located at the major public entrance and secondary entrances of facilities and off-campus buildings that use standard approved templates designed and created by the Facilities Management Sign Shop.
Unit means any University college, school, department, program, or other operating unit.
University means the Arizona Board of Regents on behalf of the University of Arizona, including Units, and Employees or agents delegated with the authority to act on its behalf and on behalf of a Units.
University Property means all land, buildings, and other facilities owned, operated, leased, or controlled by the University.
Policy
- A Unit, Employee, or DCC may not display on University Property any University Exterior Signage, including interior signage that is visible from exterior spaces, except by submitting a request and receiving approval as set forth in this Policy.
- All Exterior Signage requests, whether for permanent or temporary signage, must follow University Marketing & Communications Signage requirements and be reviewed and approved by the University Sign Committee, except for the following:
- Units requesting Standard Building Signage must submit a request form and use standard approved templates designed and created by the Facilities Management Sign Shop (Sign Shop). Standard Building Signage requests that use approved Sign Shop templates do not need to be submitted to the University Sign Committee.
- Temporary signs providing notice where more formal signage is impracticable (e.g., class cancelled/room changed notes);
- Road construction, maintenance, and electronic traffic signs; and
- Signs posted occasionally to provide notice of special events or conditions, (e.g., garage/lot full).
- Exterior Signage design must follow University Brand Guidelines for logo use, typography, and color.
- All Exterior Signage projects must be funded by the Unit submitting the request. All costs associated with Exterior Signage fabrication, installation, modification, and removal are the requester’s responsibility.
- Exterior Signage must identify University buildings by their approved name (e.g., Nugent Building).
- Individual Units in the same building must not have individual Exterior Signage. Building directories are used to provide the location of individual Units in the same building.
- Exterior Signage placement will be determined by Planning, Design & Construction in consultation with the Unit.
- Exterior Signage on University Property must be fabricated by the Sign Shop and installed by Facilities Management.
- External neon or electronic display signs, or those visible from exterior spaces, are prohibited.
- Facilities Management will notify Units of nonconforming Exterior Signage. Nonconforming Exterior Signage will be removed by Facilities Management. The Unit is responsible for removal costs.
Compliance
Facilities Management is responsible for overseeing compliance with this Policy.
